In S2, students have Mathematics for 4 periods a week. During the year most students will cover Fourth Level experiences and outcomes in the curriculum organisers: Number, Money and Measure; Shape, Position and Movement; and Information Handling. Where appropriate, learners will recap third level and extend beyond fourth level. Specific topics are detailed below – the links provided show examples of some of the types of questions pupils will work towards. Please note: Some learners will follow a different pathway if working at first, second or third level.
Throughout the year we will continually assess learner’s understanding through classroom strategies, such as mini-whiteboards and questioning. Learners will also complete short topic check-ups to identify any misunderstandings. There will be two longer assessments in October (non-calculator) and January (calculator). These will help determine what pathway pupils will follow in S3.
In S1-2 we predominantly use an online platform, Eedi, for homework. Eedi provides support for pupils as they complete their homework. Homework will consist of:
Eedi also provides an ‘Independent Learning’ section where learners can further their own mathematical skill and knowledge at home. Parents are able to set up accounts linked to their child to view progress. Learners will also receive a written homework every few weeks. For those needing to improve their fluency in basic numerical facts, Fact Freaks is a great website for regular practice. Fluency is crucial for being able to progress with more challenging concepts.
