S1 Mathematics Curriculum

S1 Curriculum

In S1, students have Mathematics for 4 periods a week. During the year most students will cover Third Level experiences and outcomes in the curriculum organisers: Number, Money and Measure; Shape, Position and Movement; and Information Handling. Where appropriate, learners will recap second level and extend into fourth level. Specific topics are detailed below – the links provided show examples of some of the types of questions pupils will work towards. Please note: Some learners will follow a different pathway if working at first or second level.

Throughout the year we will continually assess learner’s understanding through classroom strategies, such as mini-whiteboards and questioning. Learners will also complete short topic check-ups to identify any misunderstandings. There will be one longer mixed non-calculator retrieval assessment in February.

In 2025-26 we are trialling the using of Eedi for weekly homework. This is an online platform which provides support for pupils as they complete the homework. Homework will consist of:

  1. Topic quizzes with 5 questions. If learners are unsure of answers, the platform will provide support videos and further questions with the aim of fixing the misconception.
  2. Retrieval (mixed topic) quizzes focused on recapping previous learning.

Eedi also provides an ‘Independent Learning’ section where learners can further their own mathematical skill and knowledge at home. Parents are able to set up accounts linked to their child to view progress.
