Dear parents/carers,

I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well, please find this week’s update regarding different aspects of school life.

Higher and Advance Higher Examinations Cancelled
On Tuesday 8th December the Deputy First Minister cancelled the Higher and Advance Higher examinations for 2021. There is a brief statement on the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) website which can be found here. The Times Educational Supplement coverage of the announcement can be found here.

We appreciate that this news can be unnerving for parents, carers and students. Please be assured that we have planning in place to cater for this possibility. We will communicate in the New Year the school wide approach for our young people to achieve their qualifications. For now, we continue to wish the best of luck to S5 and S6 who are in the middle of undertaking formal assessments.

Wear Something Festive on 16th December
Learners are invited to bring £1 or use Parent Pay and wear something festive to school: Christmas jumper, tinsel, reindeer antlers… The money raised will be divided between the two charities: Social Bite and Vintage Vibes.

End of Term
Please note that the end of term will be Tuesday 22nd December at 12 noon.

Contact Tracing
Following the authority’s guidelines, we will provide a booklet for every pupil to record their close contacts over the next seven school days. Please note this is in addition to our own tracking system. This precaution is in the event if a positive case is confirmed during the school holiday; the Test and Protect team would use this info for contact tracing. We appreciate your support in keeping this info accurate and safe.

Positive Destinations
Today is the school deadline for UCAS applications. Pupil Support Leaders and Mrs Urquhart will be finalising these with students over the coming week before sending them to UCAS. We wish all our students luck with their applications and look forward to seeing the offers from universities in the New Year.

College applications for August will open at the end of January 2021. Pupils who would like to apply should speak with their Pupil Support Leader and arrange an appointment with Cat Burns, our Careers Adviser.

Information on Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships for January and August 2021 are regularly posted on House Teams. There are some excellent opportunities on offer in the New Year for young people.

Thank-you
A huge thank-you to all those who donated items for the foodbank. These were collected today and will go to support families in need at this time of year. Congratulations to Swanston who just pipped Carlton in the competition!

We are still collecting presents for the “Tree of Kindness”. Please drop off any further presents under the Christmas tree in the Pupil Support Base at the start of the day.

Latecomers
Please can all students remember to sign in at the School Office when arriving late to school. This is extremely important in connection with Health & Safety for contact tracing. This would also stop parents/carers receiving unnecessary absence texts. Thank-you.

S1 Football Results
A big thank-you to Mr Gray for organising the lunchtime S1 football tournament. There have been 12 matches so far and here are the current standings:

With more matches planned next week there is all to play for!

Some gentle reminders

As we approach the festive period, we wanted to remind you of a few previous messages…

Christmas Dinner (repeat notice)
Due to Covid, the plans for Christmas Dinner at Craigmount will be different this year compared to previous years. Taking account of capacity and Health & Safety issues, we decided to have a traditional Christmas dinner for S6 only this year. We are aware that this year has been a very different S6 experience, with lots of limitations both in and out of school and wanted to acknowledge this by ensuring that S6 don’t miss out on the last Christmas lunch with peers.

We recognise that students of other year groups will be disappointed; but can still enjoy some take-away form of festive fare from the canteen if they wish.

S6 students have completed a form to take part so that an appropriate food order can be placed. The Christmas dinner is on 16th December at 1200 – 1245 in the concourse.

We know this event is during the formal assessment fortnight but hope that S6 can take a pause from revision to enjoy it. If S6 are on study leave this day then they are more than welcome to come in for lunch and leave again.

Support on offer (repeat notice)
NHS Lothians has numerous resources available for our community to utilise. These have been specifically collated to support wellbeing during the Covid-19 pandemic, including specific services available. The landing page for this wealth of material can be found here. Please remember that we as a school are always willing to support and do not hesitate to contact us if you want to talk.

Here is some of the provision on offer for each year group by the school:

S1: Positive Mindset, Positive Thoughts, Positive Wellbeing with Ms Campbell: Supporting our young people to develop the skills they need to foster a positive mindset and equip themselves with strategies to support them when challenged.

S1: The Assist Programme with Mr Sansom and Mrs Frew:
This programme allows students to engage and create dialogue around their behaviour choices and impact on the school and surrounding community.

S2: We are planning a StressLess course for after Christmas.

S3: Yin Yoga with Ms Tomas:

Offers a chance to slow down, foster self-compassion, self-awareness and learn to sit with emotions and recognise them

S4: Mindfulness with Ms Savage:
Mindfulness is all about learning to direct our attention to our experience as it unfolds, moment by moment, with open-minded curiosity and acceptance.

Senior School: Emma Bathgate, our new school counsellor has joined us and is offering individual support to senior students.

Senior School: Please follow this link for some useful short clips on how to revise for examinations and manage stress levels.

Scottish Government Support for Low Income Families (repeat notice)
We are pleased to hear that the Scottish Government has announced that families in receipt of Free Schools Meals are also to receive a winter payment of £100 before Christmas to help with the costs of winter heating bills etc.

If you think you might be eligible for Free School Meals please apply online
https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/schoolgrants or speak to Mrs Jack, Development Officer (Equity) if you need support with this.

Clothing for Inclement Weather (repeat notice)

We appreciate that as Winter approaches the weather will be more intemperate. Please note that learners should continue to be mindful when dressing for school – especially of current health & safety measures: windows and doors open for ventilation; learners outside whenever possible. If you need support to acquire suitable clothing, please contact Mrs Jack: Moira.Jack@craigmount.edin.sch.uk

I hope you have a great weekend whatever you have planned.
