We have now finished our S1 Venture weeks. I was away with two classes last week and once again came back to school convinced that these trips offer a really valuable experience. Outdoor education provides a great context for getting to know students and I was so impressed at the way the students constantly coached and encouraged each other through the various challenging activities. Venture means that from early in S1, our senior staff, guidance team and tutors have a very good grasp of student needs and relationships. Of course, such a huge organisational event only runs because of the on-going commitment of staff to support residential activity and I want to publicly acknowledge and thank staff for this. I am already looking forward to next year’s trip.
On Friday afternoon, the teaching staff also met for the first of the whole school improvement group sessions for the year and made good progress. These groups are aligned with key National Priorities such as Learning & Teaching, Health & Wellbeing, Numeracy, Literacy, STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths), Rights Respecting School, Curriculum and Attainment. The groups have staff representation from across faculties and promote collegiate working and provide leadership opportunities for all staff. This collegiate approach to the leadership of change is increasingly a feature of successful schools and included as an expectation in the new national quality indicators. In connection with curriculum and STEM activities, we are always keen to hear from parents who have workplace skills that could benefit our students, or links which could facilitate quality work experience placements.
The new faculty assessment calendar overview will also go live on the website this week. I want to thank those parents who offered feedback at draft stage. Hopefully this new calendar will support parents in supporting young people. It will be highlighted at the SQA/Exams evening for S4-6 parents this Wednesday 12th October in the concourse.
There is also an information evening for P7 parents this week (Thursday 13th October from 7- 8 pm). Details are on the website.
I look forward to meeting you at either one of these evenings, or the forthcoming parent evenings later this term.
