It was great speaking to so many S1 parents this week and the parent evening on Wednesday, and to get such good feedback on both the S1 experience so far, and the organisation and delivery of the evening itself. The fund-raising groups at the event, also appreciated your generous support. At the meeting we also publicised the request for parent volunteers with a STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) event in January as Ms Stevens, CL Biology, is looking for parent volunteers in relevant industries to come in and discuss these career areas with students. Further details will be emailed to all parents next week.
Mrs Stevens also took a team of S2 students to an event and competition at the RBS Women’s Innovation Day, and I am pleased to say the Craigmount students won the event.
Staying with the career preparation theme, this week I also received some great feedback from the Urban Plan Team who were working with senior school geographers. I have included this below, as well as some comments from students involved:
“I’m writing to let you know just how impressed we were by your S4 and S5 students who took part in the Urban Plan workshop that we ran at Craigmount on Monday. Our contact was Mrs Batty, who was extremely welcoming and your students were second to none! Their professionalism from the very start to the very end was unmatchable – their presentations to the industry professionals who came in to judge the students work were honestly exceptional! We’ve been to Craigmount with the Urban Plan challenge in previous years and your students have always been good, however this year we felt we simply must email to let you know just how remarkable the students were! Even the Question and Answer session at the end of the day was filled with really insightful and thoughtful questions from the students, and provided them with some great answers, and our industry volunteers who were present noted just how switched on the students were! Thank you again for a terrific day, and please ensure our thanks (and praise) are passed on to the students who took part! We run a lot of these workshops, and for your students to stand out so much is exceptional! We can’t wait to return to Craigmount in the future!”

The student feedback:
“We all really enjoyed the designing part of the urban planner’s workshop – this was good fun and gave us an idea of what it was like in real life. It was great to work with real life town planners and good to answer their questions – this made it feel like a real experience. They answered our questions well and it was great to chat to them at the end about routes to get into that sort of work. It was really well organised and the two representatives from Urban Planners were enthusiastic and made it really fun. The interview part has really helped us to think of questions that could be asked in real life situations and helped our communication, teamwork, problem solving and interview skills. Thanks for a great day!”
K Morrison , B Pennycook, H Flynn, F Waterston and M Samuels:
Senior students this week also took part in university workshops for history and modern languages and should benefit from this experience of further education. I want to thank Mrs Crosbie and Ms Rodriguez for facilitating these visits.
Finally, a group of students, many of whom were on the trenches trip in September, laid a wreath and planted crosses of remembrance at a local event this morning with Mrs Crosbie. In school we observed a minute’s silence.
Have a good weekend.
