It was good meeting so many of you on Wednesday at the S5-6 Parent Information evening. Attendance was very high and feedback on the new online booking system was overwhelmingly positive. Having spoken with many of you, I think it would be useful to raise awareness of a brilliant free study resource called Scholar. Details are on Mr Irving’s presentation in the parent section. This was shared at the S5-6 parent information session just before October break which some of you could not attend. The statistics show regular use of this study resource can increase attainment by a grade. Please ask your son/daughter about this. They really should be accessing it.
Thank you also for supporting the range of student events at the evening. They are working hard to raise funds for very worthwhile projects and causes. Hopefully we can soon also improve the payment online systems currently being held up by circumstances beyond our control. Mr Pye has asked me to share some details of planning for the S1 Parent Evening later this month. Please see below:
S1 Parents Consultation
- We are currently finalising the website set-up
- Event on Thursday 24th November 1700-1930
- Students will get a letter on Friday explaining how to book online.
- Will go live on Monday evening at 19:00
- Please book as early as possible
- As there are a high number of teacher contacts in S1, in order to ensure a fair spread of appointments, it would be helpful if you could prioritise 10 appointments maximum – 1 per subject (please note: students may have 2 teachers on the list in shared class situations).
As always, today we marked Armistice Day with a two minute silence, which was respectfully observed across the school. Some of our students will be involved in local Church service activity doing readings at the weekend. Currently, we have a digital photograph display in the foyer based on the trip to the Battlefields earlier this term.
Today we also welcomed Mrs Scott to our Business Education Faculty. She comes to us with a great deal of classroom and SQA experience and will permanently replace Mrs Frew, now in guidance. Interviews will take place next week to replace Mr Sansom for the rest of the term as he is now in the acting guidance post following the departure of Ms Ellis.
This week I very much enjoyed joining the Advanced Higher Business class to do a question and answer session on leadership. They asked some very interesting questions on the challenges of leading during the decant last session! I was also impressed by the S2 students who jointly led the S4-6 assemblies on STEM with Ms Hickinson. I was able to make the point that no matter what happens with current political changes in the UK and abroad, future prosperity rests on young people taking up the many well-paid career opportunities linked to STEM across a range of industries. The reason why schools are emphasizing this area is because this is where many of the best (and well-paid) career options will be, with many vacancies over the next decade.
Finally, congratulations to our senior girls’ netball team, who defeated Fettes by a very comfortable margin. They are well-led by Ms Henderson (Geography) who is also a former Craigmount student.
