Craigmount High School

A caring, learning community

Dear Parents/Carers

It is now mid-term, and I am very pleased with the way we have settled back into Craigmount. Today, our joint trip to New York (Modern Studies/Art) leaves and we wish them well for the week ahead. It was also impressive to hear the excellent student-led assemblies on the Honduras trip this week. These students have also organised an excellent fund-raising campaign in recent weeks. It looks like a fantastic trip with links to STEM, Rights Respecting Schools and sustainability.

Last night we had excellent feedback from our P7 information evening, which also included 50% delivery by senior students. Many of the P7 parents commented on their impressive communication skills, subject knowledge and passion.

We also enjoyed meeting many of our S4-6 parents at the SQA/Exams help information evening on Wednesday, Mr Irving will put all the materials on the website. Once again feedback has been good. I want to draw your attention in particular to the information about Scholar. This is an online learning platform created by Heriot Watt University. It offers first class study support materials and activities. There was a presentation on this. In the past this site has supported sciences, computing, business, maths and languages, but there are now also materials for English as well. There is evidence to suggest that those students who use it regularly achieve  at least a band higher in final SQA exams. Please consider your son/daughter to use the site. They have passwords.

Finally, on Monday evening, we presented a proposal for a new curricular structure to the Parent Council. This was well-received. We are now presenting to staff on the forthcoming in-service day. After this, Mr Irving will put a further briefing on the website after further consultation with our Parent Council Chair. We also outlined plans for the new online appointments system for parent evenings. Details and help with this will be issued after the holiday.

In the meantime, I wish you all a relaxing October week and look forward to seeing you at the various parent information evenings and events when we return.
