FCT

Food & Consumer Technology is a subject where the inter-relationships between foods, diet, health, consumer education and technology are studied within the context of the home and family.

The Food & Consumer Technology Department aim to develop students as individuals by:

  • Helping  students explore their health in a practical context, enhancing their  potential to live a healthy lifestyle and make responsible choices about their diet and food.
  • Build  confidence through the development of practical food skills.
  • Prepare students for life after school by developing problem solving and      decision making ability.

S1-3 : Broad General Education

S1

Within the S1 Food & Consumer Technology Course students will study the following areas from the 3rd Level outcomes and experiences, with the focus on developing practical cookery and organisational skills

  • Food hygiene and safety
  • Nutrition & Dietary targets
  • Food labelling Food choice
  • Product development food and fabric

This course contains a large amount of practical cookery and tasting sessions for which we will require a contribution towards the cost of ingredients students will use: £30

S2

Students won’t come to FCT this year but get the opportunity to select one of our courses in the S2 option column.

  • Food Life Skills – a british nutrition foundation course developing practical food skills (This course contains a significant amount of practical cookery and tasting sessions for which we will require a contribution towards the cost of ingredients students will use: £25)
  • Fashion – introducing students to basic sewing skills while making a variety of items. (a contribution towards the cost of materials students will use: £6)

S3

Within the S3 Food & Consumer Technology Course students will study the following areas from the 3rd and 4th Level outcomes and experiences, building on the experience they have had in S1 and 2. The focus on developing practical cookery and organisational skills

  • Food and Health
  • Food product development
  • Food hygiene and safety
  • Food choice

This course contains a significant amount of practical cookery and tasting sessions for which we will require a contribution towards the cost of ingredients students will use: £50

S4-6 : National Qualifications

N3-5 Health & Food Technology

Students study the following three units building on their experiences during the broad general education.  There will be a high proportion of practical work to develop practical work which will be assessed during each unit.

Contemporary Food Issues

Product Development

 

National 5 Hospitality

This course develops skills and techniques associated with food preparation while reinforcing safe and hygienic practices.

This a very practical course for which we will require a contribution towards the cost of ingredients students will use: £80

Higher Health & Food Technology

Students will have the chance to make a more detailed study of nutrition and the link to health, while also considering the food industry and food production.

Students will complete a technological project as part of their course work developing their own food product.

Advanced Higher Health & Food Technology

We have successfully presented students at AH with the department. This course provides a challenging experience for those who wish to study health and food technology in greater depth. Students work independently while completing a dissertation.
